Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Sarasota Renters

An empty sunlit living room with sliding glass doors, tropical landscaping, and a bucket, spray bottle and folded cleaning cloths.

A move out cleaning checklist keeps you from forgetting the spots that usually get missed. Moving is tiring, and cleaning is the last job on a long list. This guide goes room by room and explains Florida's deposit rules, so you know what to expect.

Before you start cleaning

Plan your clean for the end of the move, once the home is empty. That way you can reach every corner, and you won't clean the same floor twice.

Check your lease for cleaning rules. Look at any move-in photos or notes you kept, since they show the condition of the home when you arrived.

Gather your supplies first: gloves, a scrub brush, microfiber cloths, a vacuum, a mop, trash bags, and a stepladder for high shelves.

Move-out cleaning checklist, room by room

Work from the top of each room to the bottom. Dust and grime fall as you clean, so the floors always come last.

Use this list as a guide. Your lease may add items or leave some out.

Kitchen

  • Oven. Clean the inside, the racks, and the door glass.
  • Stovetop and hood. Remove grease from the burners, the grates, and the range hood.
  • Refrigerator and freezer. Empty them, wipe the shelves and drawers, and clean the seals.
  • Cabinets and drawers. Wipe the insides and the outsides.
  • Sink and counters. Scrub the sink and faucet, then wipe the counters and backsplash.
  • Dishwasher and microwave. Wipe the insides, the door edges, and any filter or tray.

Bathrooms

  • Tub and shower. Scrub the walls, the grout, the fixtures, and the drain.
  • Toilet. Clean the bowl, the seat, the tank, and the base.
  • Sink and vanity. Wipe the basin, the faucet, the counter, and the cabinet inside and out.
  • Mirrors and fan covers. Clean the glass and dust the exhaust fan cover.

Florida's humidity helps mildew show up fast in bathrooms. The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control, so dry the shower walls and run the fan as you finish.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Closets. Wipe the shelves and rods, then vacuum the floor.
  • Baseboards and door frames. Wipe away dust and scuffs.
  • Walls. Spot-clean marks and fingerprints, and wipe the light switches.
  • Vents and ceiling fans. Dust the blades and the vent covers.

Windows, doors, and floors

  • Window sills and tracks. Vacuum out sand and dirt, then wipe them clean. Sliding door tracks collect the most.
  • Doors and handles. Wipe down both sides.
  • Floors. Vacuum first, then mop hard floors from the far corner toward the door.
  • Last look. Take out the trash and check every room with the lights on.

Laundry area, garage, and patio

  • Washer and dryer. Wipe the drum and the door seal, then clear the lint trap.
  • Garage. Sweep the floor, wipe the shelves, and clear the corners.
  • Patio or lanai. Sweep the floor, wipe the railings, and clear the sliding door track.
  • Light fixtures and screens. Wipe the covers, and rinse or vacuum the window screens.

Tips that make a move-out clean go faster

Start the slowest jobs first. Apply the oven cleaner, or soak the stovetop grates, and follow the product label for how long to wait. Work in another room while it sits.

Test any cleaner on a small hidden spot before you use it on stone counters, wood floors, or painted walls. Never mix cleaning products. Open a window or run the fan while you work.

Keep a stack of spare cloths, and swap them out between rooms. A dirty cloth only moves grime around. If you can, defrost the freezer the day before so it is ready to wipe.

Where to start if you only have a few hours

Begin with the kitchen and bathrooms. They hold the most surfaces, and wear shows there first. Do the floors last.

Closets, vents, and baseboards come next. Pick the rooms you can finish. One room done well beats three left half done.

What Florida law says about your security deposit

Florida Statute 83.49 sets the timeline for residential rentals. If your landlord isn't claiming any of your deposit, they must return it within 15 days after the tenancy ends.

If your landlord plans to keep part of it, they must send you written notice within 30 days after the tenancy ends. A landlord who misses that deadline forfeits the right to claim against the deposit, according to the statute.

You then have 15 days after you receive the notice to object in writing.

Take dated photos of each room when you finish. Include the inside of the oven and the fridge, the tub, the closets, and the floors.

Keep them with your move-in photos, so the two sets are easy to compare. If your landlord offers a walkthrough, ask to be there.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your lease, and read the statute itself.

Should you clean it yourself or hire help?

Many people clean it themselves to save money. Others hire help because moving already takes every spare hour.

If you'd rather hand it off, Sparkle in Blue offers move-in and move-out cleaning for homes across Sarasota, Manatee, and Venice, FL. We'll talk through the condition of the space before any work begins.

Our residential cleaning page lists the services we offer. When you're ready, tell us about your move and we'll talk through what fits.

A note for landlords and sellers

A written checklist sets clear expectations. Share it early, so nobody is guessing at move-out time. Sellers can use the same list before the final walkthrough.

Common questions

Do I have to clean the oven and fridge when I move out?

Check your lease first. It sets what you owe. Ovens and fridges are easy to miss, so check them either way.

How soon does my landlord have to return my deposit in Florida?

If there's no claim, within 15 days after the tenancy ends. If there is one, the landlord has 30 days to send written notice. See Florida Statute 83.49.

Should I clean before or after the furniture is out?

After. An empty home lets you reach floors, corners, and the spots behind furniture.

What makes move-out cleaning different from regular cleaning?

It reaches places a routine visit skips, like the inside of the oven, the fridge, and the cabinets.
